Matching Family Halloween Costumes: Best Ideas 2022

Here’s my list of matching family Halloween costume ideas.

What can two parents be for Halloween?

For two people, think about iconic couples from horror films, especially of the couple-versus-the-world variety. Halloween is the season to bring out your sweet, sweet nostalgia, and horror films were all the rage in the 1980s.

Or, you can go more modern and go as a superhero couple. Your choices of two superheroes who might not be “together” in the MCU might turn the head of a hardcore comics fan, but these couples are also pretty iconic.

(And don’t forget the new Captain America movie coming out in 2024…)

What can a group of 3 be for Halloween?

Three can be a hard number of people to find matching costumes for, but if you go with something cartoonish as a theme, like a shark, a football player, or a robot, you may have a better chance of getting something you can wear that fits well and looks good.

You’ll just need to come up with a backstory as to why your entire family is dressed as a shark – or a robot. Or a robot shark, come to think of it. The ideas are endless with a bit of creativity and imagination.

In all seriousness, depending on the set-up, if it’s two parents and a third child, you’ll want to think about something like the Minions or even the characters from Game of Thrones.

Three can also be an adult and two children, or three adults, which are both a little trickier.

What can a group of 4 be for Halloween?

With four people, your matching family Halloween costumes begin to open up when it comes to options. For example, with two parents and two children, you could all be characters from Ghostbusters or Harry Potter, which is always a fun choice.

You could also take the time to throw in another layer or two of matching costumes, like dressing one of the little ones up as a ghost or Harry Potter and one of the older ones a professor at Hogwarts, like McGonagall. (Huzzah!)

With four adults, adding in some sort of theme from a game or a movie, like The Avengers or Stranger Things, is a good choice.

What can a group of 5 be for Halloween?

Five is a decent number for matching family Halloween costumes. If you’re two parents and three children, two or three of the kids can dress up with the parents, or the kids can all dress up as the same thing. For example, you could be five Minions, five ghosts, five characters from the Pokémon franchise, or five of the same Disney character – or even five characters from the same book, like The Berenstain Bears or a popular TV show like The Simpsons.

If you’re three parents and two children, you can do what I just mentioned, or you can have one of the parents dress up with one of the children to have two groups – maybe “good guys” vs “bad guys” or another theme. The point is that you want to include everyone in something, even if it’s just for a photo.

Five adults can be a fun challenge, but you can also make it easier on yourself with a good set-up. If you’re a group of five adults, think about dressing up as characters from a book the whole family loves or a movie you all enjoyed.

For something like this, I’d recommend Disney movies, Star Wars, Harry Potter, or The Wizard of Oz, just to name a few. If you’re up for something more obscure, try a TV show – even if it’s on a streaming service like Netflix, you’ll still get a lot of mileage out of it.

What can a group of 6 be for Halloween?

With six people, you can pretty much go as something big and crazy, and as long as you get a set-up you can use to organize your costume, you should be fine. If you’re two parents and four children, you could go as the same thing or two separate things – I’d recommend the former, since it would make your set-up easier.

If you’re two parents and four children, maybe you’re Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and four Star Wars stromtroopers. Or you could be the Ghostbusters and four ghosts from the film. You could be the characters from the TV show “The Walking Dead” and four zombies, or you could be six Disney princesses. The possibilities are endless!

As a side note, with such a big group, it can be affordable (and fun) to make your own costumes to match. This is especially true if you’re kids are still young enough to enjoy it, and it’ll make for a much more memorable Halloween.
