7 Fun Sweater Weather Play Ideas for Autumn

Seven Indoor Activities for Sweater Weather

Autumn is the season of sweaters. With more people spending time inside in the northern hemisphere, I’ve put together a list of seven fun activities and play ideas to keep you warm and entertained with your family during the season of cozy weather.

These play ideas are a great way to keep children busy, but it doesn’t mean they are only for kids. Try to get the whole family involved and create a fun event out of it. Once you’ve decided on what to do with your evening, enjoy the time together.

I put this list together with a focus on keeping a warm and safe atmosphere, mainly because a lot of children are not allowed out of doors once it’s dark during the fall and winter months.

Seven Indoor Activities for Sweater Weather

Here’s my list of seven fun activities for the fall season of sweaters.

1 – Card game night

Playing cards is a versatile game for all ages. From classic games like Uno and Go Fish to Poker and Solitaire, I’ve found it important to keep a worthy card deck in the house. My family loves to invest an evening with friends and family playing card games to pass the time.

If you’re really interested in learning a new game, there’s a great tutorial here. The game itself doesn’t matter as much as getting people together. Playing cards can provide hours of entertainment indoors on a chilly Autumn day.

2 – Movie night

Fall is a great time for new releases and Halloween specials. In the past, I’ve found that children are more interested in gathering with family around the television as opposed to playing outside. Whether you pick something well known or a little more childish, watching a new release together is a great way to spend time with each other.

Stranger Things is a great show for older kids, but even something like Charlie Brown is fun to watch at any age. One of my favorite movies to watch is The Nightmare Before Christmas. This movie is great for children and adults, and it’s a very fun movie for the whole family.

Whatever the movie, get together, sit back, and enjoy the night. Your family will love any opportunity to laugh, cry and think together.

3 – Board Game Night

As I mentioned before, we love a good board game. Whether you’re playing with young children or your grandparents, a quality board game is a great way to spend an evening. We have some family favorites that we have played a lot of times.

Finding a good board game is a challenge, but there’s something available for everyone. A board game is a great way to get everyone together. There’s no electronics, and the interaction can help spark great dialogue between members of the family.

My family loves to play Risk (classic version) and sometimes Settlers of Catan. If you’re interested in learning a new game, there’s a lot of fun tutorials online. Again, the idea is to get the family together for some quality time more than the game you choose.

4 – Pumpkin Carving Party

There’s no better time to get creative with a jack-o’-lantern than in the fall. I’ve found that carving pumpkins is a fun activity for all ages. It’s a great way to pass the time on a fall evening, and it will get everyone excited for Halloween.

There are a few different ways to handle carving pumpkins. The first is a classic jack-o’-lantern. My family loves to use stencils, but we occasionally put our own spin on things. Your family will enjoy making a design together and enjoying the end result.

Another fun twist on the classic jack-o’-lantern is to paint rather than carve. There are a lot of fun tutorials on YouTube that can help you find a design that works for your family. There’s a lot of cool ideas on YouTube, but the most important thing is that you spend some time together.

5 – Craft night

Craft night is a great way to spend an evening with the family. There are so many possibilities, but I’ve found that the most important thing is to stay warm. Some of my favorite ideas are creating festive fall decorations.

My family loves to create things for the house. We’ve done this before, and it’s a great activity for the whole family. It doesn’t have to be anything big, but it’s a great way to bond and create new things. I know of some families who create ornaments to give as gifts.

Whether you decide to create a painting, a personal journal, or a hand-crafted bird feeder, craft night is a great way to have fun and spend time together. When it’s cold outside, it’s hard to go outside. So, why not spend the evening inside creating memories?

6 – Story Night

How about a night inside with the family comfortable in the living room, telling stories? I’ve found that my family loves to tell stories. There are a lot of reasons why we do this, but I think the most important is that it helps us to understand each other.

In the past, I’ve found that my kids will share more when they can tell it in their own words. When it’s cold and dark outside, why not spend some time inside with the family telling stories? Story night can be a blast, and best of all, there is no limit to what you can do.

I’m not talking about the kind of story you tell in school or the stories you hear in the movies. There are some great stories that are told in families. I’ve found that telling stories is a great way for a family to come together and bond.

If you don’t know any great family stories, I’ve found that YouTube is a great place to search. The stories on YouTube can be a little cute, but it shows off the talent of the storyteller. If you’re interesting in learning more about family stories, I’ve found a lot of great resources on Google.

7 – Homemade Hot Chocolate Party

The most important thing about sweater weather is keeping warm. It’s a great time to curl up with a warm drink while you and the family bond. I’ve found that a homemade hot chocolate party is a great way to spend an evening.

I know some people that like to add a little peppermint schnapps to the mix. I’m not a big fan of alcohol myself, but I do like to add a little schnapps to the mix for the adults. It’s a great way to keep warm and enjoy each other’s company.

Once the mixture is ready, you can enjoy some hot chocolate while you and the family bond. The drinks are delicious, and they will keep you and the family together. It’s also a great time to reminisce on the best holiday memories from years gone by.

Sweater Weather Play Ideas for Autumn: Final Thoughts

Those are my seven play ideas for sweater weather. There are a lot of other ideas you can use. It doesn’t have to be the same thing every time. Just finding a way to spend time together is the most important part.

If you find it hard to get away from electronics, try to spend time together doing something you don’t normally do. Go out of your comfort zone and remember that sometimes the best things come in small packages.
